Business can be overwhelming.
As you grow, so do your responsibilities, the number of people relying on you, and the sheer volume of things on your plate.
This is especially true in the early years.
You’re building the plane while flying it.
You’re serving clients, solving problems, and trying to stay calm when everything feels urgent.
We had a client recently who came to us feeling exactly like that.
The work was coming in. Revenue was growing. But so was the pressure.
So today, we're sharing some advice we shared with him, in hopes it helps you too.
Because while pressure in business is normal, how you frame that pressure makes all the difference.
4 MINDSET SHIFTS TO MANAGE ANXIETY IN BUSINESS
1. Surf the waves
Here's the truth: There will always be problems.
It's the price of doing business.
But challenges aren't a sign that something is broken.
They are a sign that you are in the game.
No one gets through twelve months of running a business without setbacks.
Clients will be late. Projects will go sideways. People will leave. Systems will fail.
Instead of resisting the problems and wishing they would stop, try this mindset:
“There will always be waves. My job is to learn to surf.”
Surfing doesn’t mean the waves go away.
It means you get stronger, more skilled, and better at enjoying the ride.
2. Most things won’t matter in six months
When you’re in the middle of a crisis — running late for a meeting, losing a sale, dealing with a difficult email — it can feel huge.
But zoom out.
Ask yourself, “Will I even remember this in six months?”
The answer is usually no.
Most of what causes day-to-day anxiety in business is short-term.
Keep your focus on the bigger picture, and give yourself permission to let go of the things that don’t matter in the long run.
3. Discomfort is where growth happens
One of our favourite quotes is, “Pain plus reflection equals progress.”
Every time you hit a wall in business, you’re being handed an opportunity to learn something valuable.
The question is, are you going to pause long enough to get the lesson?
When you feel discomfort - stress, tension, fear - try asking:
- What is this trying to teach me?
- What system or skill would solve this next time?
- What can I do differently so this gets easier?
Discomfort without reflection is just pain.
Discomfort with reflection is how your business gets better.
4. Life is short. Enjoy it.
This might be the most important one.
You won't be remembered in three generations.
Neither will we.
That’s not depressing. It's freeing.
It’s a reminder that your business, as important as it is, is not everything.
So enjoy it.
Appreciate the fact that you get to create something.
Take breaks. Laugh with your team. Spend time with the people you love.
The work will still be there tomorrow. Make sure the joy is too.
Bottom line:
Pressure is part of business.
But anxiety doesn’t have to be.
With the right mindset, you can navigate the waves, stay calm in the chaos, and enjoy the journey, no matter how big things get.
